What is TheIGDB?
TheIGDB is the Internet's first professionally researched videogaming database that plans to store all possible information for every single game ever released.
In addition to this a thriving community will be built in order to ensure that not only is the data of the highest quality but also to allow users to add their voice to gaming history through ratings, comments, reviews and the forums.
The site is a mine of information allowing you to delve further and glean more information the longer you spend on it. For example, looking at a certain game will tell you which formats it was released for. Clicking on a format will then take you to the format page which will display alli the relevant info, a list of games for that particular format as well as a list of key staff and any additional information we feel is relevant.
What platforms does the site cover?
Quite simply, every single possible format you can think of.
Do I have to pay to use the site?
Not at all. The site is and always shall be free to use.
How can I reach the main menu?
Easy. Simply click the 'menu' button on the list of options on the left hand side of the site design.
What happens with games that have the same name? Cunningly we've added the year of release after the name of the game to easily allow users to find the relevant game they want. For example, searching for Sonic the Hedgehog will bring up both the original release with the relevant year and the new next-gen version.
Who is behind TheIGDB?
Well, now that you ask:
William Cox: It was Will's brain that gave him a rare enlightened moment that sparked the idea for the website. Being a gamer all his life and with a particular love for all things Nintendo as well as a keen Internet user he saw a chance to combine two of his passions and the seeds for TheIGDB were sown. Will resides in Bournemouth in the UK and is currently experiencing something of a Zelda obsession.
Ross MacDonald: Ross has worked on an existing gaming website, and through numerous conversations with Will saw the possibilities that a new, all-encompassing site could offer. With numerous contacts in the gaming industry Ross provides the site with a link to professional research and has plenty of experience with his time at MSN on working on large websites and the commercial opportunities afforded to them. Ross currently lives in Stourbridge in the UK and is experiencing something of a Stella obsession at the moment.
How is TheIGDB constructed?
The backbone of TheIGDB is a large MySQL database, in order to offer the fully linked and cross-referencable service it was necessary that the database running the site be as in-depth as currently possible. Every page you look at within TheIGDB will look at a number of areas of this database in order to provide you with the complete picture of what your looking at. The database we currently use took 3 months of planning, a further 3 months of implementation and is constantly being tweaked to provide you with the best service possible.
Of course, this database wouldn't be of much value if noone could look at it. In order to bring TheIGDB to your browser we use the latest version of PHP to access the data, XHTML to display it, and CSS to make it as easy to use as possible.
Where does all the data on the site come from?
The data is researched via a number of different sources and cross-referenced to ensure that it is actually correct data that is being input. The data is then entered into the database via a web-based form system.
Is there anything else I should know?
TheIGDB reserves the right to reject any contributions if they are below acceptable quality levels.
Once information is entered into TheIGDB database it immediately becomes the property of TheIGDB.
All content and code is Copyright 2006, TheIGDB.

Despite the size of our current database the sheer scale of the gaming industry means we're always going to be missing something. If you can't find something that you feel should be included then please get in contact with us and we'll see what we can do.
